The Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU) at MMEMS brings the capability of advanced support therapies to patients requiring life support while being transported from one hospital to another - across town and across the country.
The MICU at MMEMS is staffed by a Registered Nurse (RN), a state-certified Paramedic (EMT-P), and a third person, either an EMT-B or an EMT-P (who is responsible for the safe transport of patient and crew).
The staff of the MICU come from a myriad of backgrounds including helicopter life flight as well as hospital and pediatric ICUs. Some of our personnel even hold part-time positions as ALS and CPR instructors.
The MICU can provide ventilator management, invasive line monitoring, cardiac monitoring, defibrillation, pacing, cardioversion - to name a few. The MICU is available for patients requiring a higher level of care, more advanced monitoring and support therapies enroute. Some of these patients include, but are not limited to:
- Cardiac
- Neurological and trauma injuries
- High risk pregnancies
- Shock
- Head injuries
- Organ recipients
- Hyperbaric chamber patients
- Physical rehab patients
- CO poisonings
- Transfering patients closer to home
